When you decide whether or not to contribute to a specific charity and how much, do you usually weigh the particular cause it champions more or its track record with regard to providing measurable help to people? One of the things that make neighborhood organizations appeal to me over larger more widespread charities is that with the local efforts, you can see exactly what they are doing to aid people, how well it works and if it is really helping. Does being able to witness the efforts of your chosen charity help reassure you your money is going to good use, or do you have more faith in widespread efforts even if they are mostly out of sight?

I definitely think you should do everything you can to verify the money you give is being used effectively, but it's not always possible to verify it first hand. I don't question there are some legitimate needs in my home town and I'd be able to at least somewhat verify first hand that what I am giving is being used properly, but for me that's outweighed by the fact that there are far greater needs in other parts of the world and the same amount of money given would go much further there.
